2018 SAP Sapphire Now Succession Report: SAP Manufacturing Footprint Increases

By Bill Lydon, Editor, Automation.com

In the many trade shows I covered, it was fascinating to see how industry giants have it have sought their efforts with the new technologies. In June, I found the most recent example when attending the SAP Sapphire Now 2018 event in Orlando, Florida. During the four-day event, which attracted more than 21,000 attendees from more than 100 countries, it was clear that SAP was focusing on expanding its role to encompass all non-design manufacturing functions and hard real-time control. Their software is already widely used in many industries:

  • 76% of global transaction revenues touch an SAP system
  • 83% of global revenues from business-to-business transactions touch an SAP system
  • SAP systems Touching $ 22 Trillion in Consumer Purchases Around the World

SAPPHIRE NOW 2018 hosted a major trade show in the 1 million square feet of the North and South Halls of the Orange County Convention Center. A keynote theater accommodated some 6,000 people in front of an 80-foot-wide stage, surrounded by six screens, each 20 meters high and nearly 87 feet long, with standing room capacity for each session. The expansive booth featured exhibits from nearly 250 partner companies and six "campuses" grouped by SAP solutions, offering a mix of presentation theaters, microforms (small circular seating areas for current discussions), closed meeting rooms, and new "Test Drive" tables the participants could try out SAP products. In addition to the thousands of participants, SAP hosted 10 remote viewing sites, one in Latin America and one in Europe, and eight in North America, for customers who were unable to travel to Orlando due to sequestration.

Investing in the Internet of Things

SAP CEO Bill McDermott explained SAP's ambitions for the future industrial environment with its planned $ 2 billion investment by 2020:

Facilitate the Digital Factory

Through these IoT efforts SAP has a clear focus on helping customers transform processes into digital systems. They assume that the potential benefits around summarize:

  • Operational Data for Company-wide Analytics
  • Real-time visibility into production operations
  • Low total costs t Own and secure scope
  • Predictive asset maintenance with service providers
  • Maximized workload utilization
  • Optimized budget allocation
  • Reduced unplanned outages and device failures

The OPC UA Strategy

As part of this effort, SAP is using OPC UA for interface control and automation and is fully committed to the standard. Veronika Schmid-Lutz, VP of Product Product Owner in SAP Manufacturing, is a member of the OPC Foundation Board of Directors. To create interfaces, they use SAP Plant Connectivity (PCo) – a framework and set of services and management tools that enable the creation of connectors that provide the communication paths between control systems, ECUs, files, Historians, TCP sockets, and SAP Manufacturing (SAP ME, SAP MII, SAP EWM, SAP ODA, etc.). PCo is a software component of SAP Manufacturing developed by Microsoft.Net.

In addition to their internal corporate goals, SAP announced collaborative plans with Accenture, Capgemini, and Deloitte to accelerate customer adoption of SAP S / 4HANA Cloud manufacturing, discrete manufacturing, and service -Industry. Together, the companies want to develop solutions to fulfill the promise of the intelligent company. Co-development initiatives will cover broad aspects, from collaboration with pilot customers to joint innovation, development and market introduction strategies. Key areas include supporting industry-specific next-generation business processes with artificial intelligence (AI) and automation in SAP S / 4HANA Cloud.

"SAP is working closely with Accenture, Capgemini, and Deloitte to turn customers into process manufacturing, discrete manufacturing, and service into smart companies by supporting a new generation of business processes," said Franck Cohen, president of Digital Core and Industry Solutions, SAP, "With a no more keyboard-intensive user experience and manual processes automated with the help of artificial intelligence, our customers are able to redesign their business models while keeping costs to a minimum to reduce." 19659011] SAP is making several efforts with these partners, who have in-depth industry expertise in specific areas to meet industry-specific customer requirements for intelligence and business processes:

Accenture and SAP have begun to develop a solution , which runs on SAP S / 4HANA Cloud for the oil and gas industry. The solution provides intelligent insights from public cloud services to help oil and gas companies reduce their operating costs and tap into new revenue streams. The initiative aims to provide benefits and added value for customers in the industrial Internet of Things, intelligent automation, machine learning and digital twins.

Deloitte and SAP Expand Collaboration by Accelerating the Launch of the SAP S / 4HANA Cloud in the Service and Process Industries. With early customer validation and investment in SAP S / 4HANA and Deloitte's Reimagine platform, SAP and Deloitte want to combine technologies such as machine learning and artificial intelligence with Deloitte's expertise, particularly with the transformation of business processes. In this way, the collaboration plans to provide solutions for managing exponential data, transforming core digital capabilities, and accelerating customer digital transformation.

Bill's Thoughts and Observations

Throughout the event experience, I found that SAP is focused and well positioned to help manufacturers adopt a holistic architecture for automation, business intelligence, and manufacturing execution to reach. These efforts can improve the manufacturing industry by integrating all aspects of production and commerce across enterprise boundaries for greater efficiency. The SAP architecture is currently integrating production, manufacturing, and enterprise architectures to achieve more responsive manufacturing that integrates footprint manufacturing software middleware functionality into a cohesive system. In today's dynamic technological world, it will continue to be interesting to see how they evolve and innovate in the future.
