ABB supports the construction of the digital substation in Maharashtra, India

22. June 2018 – ABB will support Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (MSETCL), a state-owned power transmission company in India, with ABB Ability technology for its digital substation, which will be a key component of next-generation networks in the country. The substation will help transfer clean energy from nearby solar plants to the rest of the country.

ABB acquired the Engineering & Procurement Company (EPC) Stelmec Ltd. received the order for this digital substation operated by Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (MSETCL), a large state power transmission company. ABB provides protection and control devices, a MicroSCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system, and a process bus that enables interoperable communication between providers over Ethernet cables rather than copper wires.

The substation is currently the largest planned digital substation project in India, based on the number of bays and voltage levels, and a natural next step for MSETCL to improve the reliability, efficiency and safety of the grid, supporting India's Smart Grid Mission and Smart City Vision. In addition, the utility can remotely monitor and manage the substation. As India brings more and more renewable energy into the grid, managing these intermittent power sources is a challenge for many utilities. Digital substations will be one of the strategic core elements for flexible power grids needed for safe and stable integration of intermittent renewable energy sources.

In digital substations, fiber optic cables replace conventional copper interconnects, enabling digital communication and reducing environmental impact. The digital switchgear gathers real-time data from primary equipment and converts it into actionable information so the utility can monitor, control, and maintain equipment and achieve cost savings. This critical inventory data can then be sent to the ABB Ability Ellipse Asset Performance Management (APM) software, which enables predictive and preventive maintenance.

Maharashtra is among the most industrialized countries in the country and was recognized as an early user of technology. It is also the home of Mumbai. Over the years, MSETCL has grown significantly to meet the growing power needs of the state. The utility has 46,200 circuit kilometers of transmission lines and a system capable of handling 21,000 MW, equivalent to the power consumption of more than 10 million households.

ABB also recently launched a 110 kilovolt (kV) digital substation for Technopark, the largest IT park in India, based on a built-up area in the southern state of Kerala and covering an area of 930,000 square meters.
