DMDII Announces Koushik Subramanian as Director of National Center for Cyber Security in Manufacturing

18. July 2018 – The Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII) announced that information security expert Koushik Subramanian has been appointed director of the National Center for Cybersecurity in Manufacturing

DMDII launched the center in March with $ 750,000 in seed money from the US Department of Defense [19659003] As manufacturing begins to retrofit or build production lines with software and sensors, the attack surface only expands. According to the 2017 Verizon Data Violation Report, thirty-five percent of cyber espionage in the US is handled by manufacturing, the largest single-sector entity.

"The security of the American supply chain for manufacturing depends on the practices of its individual manufacturers, most of which are smaller companies," said Tracy Frost, director of the Department of Defense Manufacturing Technologies, Bureau of the Ministry of Defense, and Production industrial base policy. "The center will reduce the educational and cost barriers that the industry faces in order to increase its readiness for cyber attacks."

In addition to Subramanian's role as Director of Cyber Security for DMDII, Subramanian will also serve as Chief Information Security Officer for UI LABS, DMDII's parent organization that drives the digital future of production and cities.

Prior to the DMDII was Subramanian, 33, director of risk and compliance at Uptake Technologies. He led privacy, risk and information security initiatives and helped secure newly acquired technology. Prior to joining Uptake, Subramanian was a qualified security assessor and managing consultant at Trustwave, helping Fortune 1000 companies to comply with the payment card industry's privacy standard.

"His experience in the industrial IoT sector will be invaluable as we continue to address the unique security needs of the networked factory for defense manufacturers and other corporate partners."

The Center will focus its activities in three areas: awareness raising, labor development and cost-effective tool development. To distribute nationwide educational materials, hardware and software tools to factories, the center collaborates with the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) of the National Standards and Technology Institute (NIST), with centers in all 50 states and Puerto Rico owning more than 26,000 manufacturers annually
