InnovaGel, a manufacturer of vitamins and nutritional supplements in the nutraceutical and OTC market, needed Solution for the application of soft gelatin encapsulation machines. The company did not have an efficient way to determine the gelatin level in the tanks, resulting in material loss and production time between batches. Endress + Hauser was able to offer a solution for level measurement that best meets the requirements of InnovaGel application.

InnovaGel has had challenges with its soft gel encapsulation process. The machine operator ran a batch and could not determine the ideal time to change the tank. The manufacturer did not have an effective method for detecting the gelatin level in the tanks or a way to alert the operator to an impending low level. The operator would wait until air was blown out of the lines to indicate when the tank was empty and then change the tank.

The operator changed the tank manually, which normally causes the tank to be delayed by 20 minutes. This conversion was required up to three times a day, which lost up to one hour of production per machine per day.

Development Process

InnovaGel knew it needed a more efficient and cost-effective way to measure tank levels. The company saw that it needed valuable material and production time, and knew that continuous measurement was needed to streamline the process.

Solution Details and Solutions

Endress + Hauser's sales staff have been working with the InnovaGel development team to find the best solution for the soft gel encapsulation machine. Endress + Hauser recommended the Micropilot FMR52. The FMR52 is used for continuous, non-contact level measurement of aggressive liquids, pastes and slurries in hygienic applications. The measurement is not affected by changing media, temperature fluctuations, gas blankets or vapors.

In the nutraceutical industry, InnovaGel needed an accurate, reliable and hygienic compact sensor design to achieve the minimum process interruption required when changing tanks. The company was familiar with instrumentation from Endress + Hauser, as a partnership was established with Endress + Hauser, while Liquiphant and Soliphant were used for level detection in other tank applications.

The sales representatives of Endress + Hauser recommended the micropilot FMR52 for the application. The compatibility of the level sensor with the existing peripherals, which are indicators with alarm function displays, enabled seamless integration.

"The integrity of the design is crucial to us. The FMR52 is a compact, easy-to-use and standalone device that works well and meets the standards of our industry, "said Chris Aemisegger, InnovaGel's Director of Engineering. "We have eliminated the possibility of introducing air into the process, resulting in efficient start-up and changeover times. What took 15-25 minutes to complete the process now takes less than five minutes or does not cause any downtime, "added Aemisegger.

Endress + Hauser helped with the initial setup, including commissioning and programming, and sales representatives trained InnovaGel employees on site Since each tank is identical, they could use the HistoROM copy function on the display to duplicate the parameter settings for the remaining six softgel encapsulation machines.


InnovaGel decided to purchase FMR52s for each of the seven soft gel encapsulation machine lines and is satisfied with the performance.

Said Aemisegger. "With the installation of the FMR52, we saved an hour of production change per hour, resulting in a ROI of three months."
