  EtherCAT Technology Group Announces Vendor-Independent Diagnostic Interface

5. December 2018 - The EtherCAT Technology Group (ETG) has established a vendor-independent diagnostic interface that allows third-party tools to access diagnostic information from EtherCAT networks. The software-based interface can be implemented in any device manufacturer's controls, making it attractive to both master device manufacturers and diagnostic tools.

Diagnosis is one of the most important functions of a modern fieldbus system. EtherCAT offers comprehensive diagnostic information at both hardware and software level. An EtherCAT function is the ability to not only detect but also locate faults. This includes bit errors as well as problems caused by loose connectors. The corresponding error counters are supported by all network slave devices. In addition, diagnostic routines test the quality of communication and help to detect internal errors in slaves, incorrect cable order, damaged cables or EMC interference.

This manufacturer has given the ETG -independent diagnostic interface so that third-party diagnostic tools can work with any master implementation. No hardware changes are required as an EtherCAT master as well as the interface is software-based.

The standardized interface provides access to EtherCAT network diagnostic information for hardware and software. Through the information provided by this interface, diagnostic tools or HMIs can retrieve the information from the EtherCAT network topology, compare it to the expected configuration, and detect communication interruptions and faults, as well as unexpected state changes.

The specification ETG.1510 "Profile for Master Diagnosis Interface" extends the specification "EtherCAT Master Classes" and extends the already defined in the specification "Modular Device Profile" EtherCAT Master Object Dictionary. Likewise, the access mechanism uses the already specified mailbox gateway function.
