  FDT Group Announces Full Platform Independence for the Architecture of FDT IIoT Server (FITS)

7. November 2018 - FDT Group, an independent, international, not-for-profit standard association that supports the development of FDT technology (IEC 62453), announced that its Board of Directors has unanimously agreed to support the emerging FDT IIoT Server Architecture (FITS) architecture full platform independence. This principled decision strengthens the FITS architecture to support the multiple operating systems to meet the needs of the industry.

In addition to platform independence, FITS solutions include the native integration of OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA). as well as comprehensive control and web service interfaces. With integrated security to protect valuable information and operational data, the FITS platform will enable cloud, enterprise, on-premise, and single-user desktop deployment processes that meet the needs of the process, hybrid, and discrete manufacturing sectors.

The importance of platform independence in the FITS architecture can not be overstated as the scenarios for secure deployment and application are nearly unlimited. For example, cloud-based FDT servers can take advantage of the performance and cost advantages of a Linux operating system. Traditional control system vendors can offer the FDT server embedded in their hardware, and machine builders can deploy a small Linux-based FDT server that provides a complete, pre-configured asset management system for their assembly, securely, or with smartphones or Browsers can be safely accessed. MES applications can also include an FDT server to provide secure, direct access to production data and inventory and availability metrics for resources through OPC UA. In addition, service providers can wrap services around an FDT server deployed in a hardened Linux box.

Due to the security, scalability, and deployment of an FDT server, the solution will simplify entry into the IIoT market as the only open system platform standardized integration architecture that provides a single interface with mobile access to cloud-to-plant floors , The decision to migrate to platform independence is delaying the introduction of the FITS specification by about six months. With the market launch scheduled for the second half of 2019, automation providers and service providers will be able to immediately take advantage of a rapid development and deployment strategy in addition to the common components that support the FITS standard. Common Components create a library of FDT routines and simplify the compatible development of FITS-based solutions such as servers, Device Type Manager (DTMs), and APPs.

The final standard comes in three documents: the FDT 2.5 specification, which builds on FDT 2.1 to incorporate the graphical user interface features of HTML5 and JavaScript; the technical specification of the FITS web services, which describes the web service interfaces and requirements for an FDT server; and the OPC UA attachment, which describes how to map the OPC UA server to an FDT server.
