13. November 2018 --- The M12 is a conventional circular connector and is referred to as an interface for data and signals. In order to provide a similarly dimensioned interface for energy-intensive applications, the M12 is now also available in K coding according to IEC 61076-2-111. With four power contacts and a PE, 7kW can be safely transmitted at 630 V and 16 A - plenty of power in the interface. HARTING will present the connector at the "electronica" trade fair (13 to 16 November 2018 in Munich / Hall C2, Booth 548).
The progressive miniaturization has increasing effects on the power supply of drives and of networks. The step of developing and standardizing K-coding was therefore a logical and necessary step. Power supplies for circular connectors have so far been implemented using 7/8 inch solutions. With PROFINET, 0.75 kW M12-L coding at 63 V and 16 A is a well-established standard. In order to be able to offer the device manufacturer M12 the form factor for the power supply, HARTING will supply the K coding with 7 kW at 630 V and 16 A from spring 2019, thus enabling the integrated transmission of data, signals and power.
With the high voltages, the board socket on the contact side must be protected from flashovers. For this purpose, all hold-down with an insulator are separated. K-coded cable is available in a crimp version. The connection is secured with the familiar M12 screw connection. There will also be a new PushPull version that clicks into place.
