ISA and The Open Group Announce Cooperation to Advance Interoperable Process Control Architecture

24. July 2018 – The International Society of Automation and the Open Group have approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to work together to advance and harmonize the development of a vendor-neutral, interoperable, secure control architecture for applications in all process industries. Activities include sharing best practices, reviewing documents and sharing forums.

The Open Group is an industry consortium of more than 625 companies and organizations that develops open, vendor-independent technology standards and certifications. The new liaison agreement specifically addresses the Open Process Automation Forum (OPAF), which focuses on developing a standards-based, open, secure and interoperable process control architecture.

ISA, a member association of some 40,000 automation experts, is known worldwide for the development of US national standards in an open-consensus process that has been accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The Geneva-based International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has adopted many of the ISA's international standards as international standards.

The key ISA / IEC standards on cybersecurity and corporate governance are primary motivational factors in the agreement, emphasizes Dennis Brandl, co-chairman of the OPAF Standards Working Group and chair of the OPAF Technology Architecture Subcommittee.

"This MOU demonstrates the commitment of ISA and The Open Group to develop open standards that translate best practices into the industry," he says. "The widely used ISA / IEC standards for the integration of enterprise control systems (ISA-95) and ISA / IEC 62443 (ISA-99) for the safety of automation and control systems are key elements of the OPAF specifications.

Elements of the ISA / IEC standards for alarm management (ISA-18), process safety (ISA-84) and batch process control (ISA-88) are considered for incorporation into the OPAF specifications and we look forward to seeing both groups work together to deliver the best solutions and best practices that industry needs in the new world of intelligent manufacturing. He is also a member of ISA's Standards & Practices Board, as well as Don Bartusiak, chief engineer, process control at ExxonMobil Research & Engineering, co-chair of OPAF. Ed Harrington, Forum Director of the Open Process Automation Forum, said: "This is another milestone in the evolution of process automation worldwide, and we are honored to work directly with ISA to enhance our collaboration and vision of the many industries that work for us This is also an important step in our quest to create a framework and standard for process automation that aims to bring tangible benefits to multiple sectors, and we look forward to it We look forward to moving forward with ISA as a co-operation partner on this path. "

ISA will host a forthcoming OPAF meeting from 11 to 13 September 2018 at Research Triangle Park, NC.
