Kaspersky Survey: 3/4 of ICS cybersecurity incidents questioned

26. June 2018 Kaspersky Lab has published a new "State of Industrial Cybersecurity 2018" survey that found that 65 percent of cybercriminals are affected Organizations worldwide believe that OT / ICS security risks are more likely with IoT Therefore, the realization of IoT use cases and the management of connected devices next year is more than half (53%) of great importance.

To Understand The problems and opportunities faced by ICS organizations today, as of April, Kaspersky Lab and Pierre Audoin Consultants (PAC – a CXP company) conducted a survey of 320 global OT decision-makers / ICS cybersecurity from 25 countries through – May 2018. With the increasing trend towards digitization – including increased connectivity and IoT – industrial organizations are growing as well as the cybersecurity risks associated with complex industrial environments

The convergence of IT and OT , the increased connectivity of OT with external networks and the growing number of industrial IoT devices increase the efficiency of industrial processes, but also introduce new risks and vulnerabilities. Industry respondents feel insecure as more than three quarters (77%) of respondents say their organization is likely to be the target of a cybersecurity incident affecting their industrial control networks.

Respondents' concerns regarding IoT) argue that the increased risks associated with connectivity and the integration of IoT ecosystems pose a major cyber security challenge, as well as new types of IoT security measures being implemented (50%) and the implementation of IoT use cases (45%). Although the IoT raises many new concerns for organizations, protection against traditional cyber threats still has to be paramount.

ICS-dependent companies are still victims of conventional threats such as malware and ransomware. While the risk of targeted attacks and APTs (66%) has increased, nearly two-thirds (64%) of companies experienced at least one conventional malware or virus attack on their IKSs last year, and 30% of companies had ransomware sales -Angriff, and 27 per cent had broken their IKS because of the mistakes and actions of the coworkers. Although it was the biggest problem, targeted attacks on the sector in 2018 accounted for only 16 percent (compared to 36 percent in 2017). This shows a discrepancy between the perception of business concerns and the reality of the threats to which they are exposed.

"As the sector increasingly applies digital trends such as cloud and IoT to increase efficiency, the challenge and importance of cybersecurity becomes even more important in keeping critical systems running and keeping businesses up and running," said Georgy Shebuldaev, brand manager at Kaspersky Industrial Cybersecurity. "The good news is that more and more companies are improving their cybersecurity policies with targeted measures to protect their industrial control networks, and while this is a step in the right direction, measures need to go further to keep pace with digitization Update incident response programs to cover specific ICS measures and deploy dedicated cybersecurity solutions to meet this challenge. "

Connectivity and IoT will continue to grow as companies invest in more intelligent technologies and automation and adopt Industry 4.0. When it comes to wireless networks and cloud computing for OT / ICS usage, as many as 15 percent of industrial companies use cloud solutions for SCADA control systems and 25 percent plan to implement them next year. This is a sign of using the cloud for high-level critical infrastructure management, which presents a new challenge for industrial enterprises to adequately secure these critical environments.

While protection against traditional threats is always maintained, cybersecurity is crucial to industrial organizations, keeping pace with the rate of technology adoption to ensure that the benefits outweigh the risks. Businesses also need strong ICS incident response programs to avoid serious operational, financial and reputational damage. With a dedicated incident response program and dedicated cybersecurity solutions to manage the complex nature of connected and distributed industrial ecosystems, organizations can keep their services, products, customers, and environments safe.
