  Microchip Technology Introduces CryptoAutomotive's In-Vehicle Network (IVN) TrustAnchor / Border Security Device

8. August 2018 – Microchip Technology introduced the CryptoAutomotive's In-Vehicle Network (IVN) TrustAnchor / Border Security Device (TA / BSD) development kit. This kit is designed to give OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers the ability to assure networked vehicle systems, starting in priority areas, with no interruption elsewhere. The CryptoAutomotive TA / BSD Development Kit emulates a secure node in an automotive network and provides system designers with a starting point for implementing security. The tool has been designed to be flexible and support OEM implementation, as manufacturers can configure the node to meet different specifications and industry standards. The tool demonstrates secure key storage, electronic ECU authentication, hardware-based crypto accelerators, and other cryptographic elements. In conjunction with a host microcontroller, designers can implement features such as Secure Boot and Controller Area Network (CAN) authentication, including converting CAN 2.0 messages to CAN Flexible Data Rate (CAN-FD) with attached Message Authentication Codes (MAC)

With the companion approach, the TA / BSD emulation kit allows OEMs to continue to use their existing microcontrollers (MCUs) and existing MCU firmware to the required security standards by later using the companion chip, the Emulating the kit adds. These companion chips are delivered pre-programmed to the customer and include integrated security measures to provide true hardware-based key protection. This may result in a rebuilding of the MCU firmware to implement secure zones with hardware and software domains.

The tool can be used with any ECU, architecture, configuration or bus and offers the flexibility to implement security in existing systems. Scale redesigns. The companion chip solution requires minimal MCU code updates. This approach also eliminates the requirement for internal security expertise. The tool provides an online graphical user interface (GUI) program with preconfigured options to simplify and facilitate implementation.
