1. November 2018 - Fourth grade students from the Foose Elementary School of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, built industrial control systems and played reality games this week, as Phoenix Contact employees gave them the endless opportunities of education in science, engineering, Technology and Mathematics (STEM) presented.

About 100 students visited Phoenix Contact's US headquarters in Middletown, Pennsylvania, on Monday, October 29, to kick off their second annual program "Think BIG!". The partnership with the Harrisburg School District is a year-round curriculum designed to inspire primary school students for MINT careers.

The kick-off event on Monday introduced the students in Phoenix Contact and his know-how in engineering and manufacturing. In addition to the practical activities, the students took a window display tour of the US plant and gave a preview of the science class they will attend during the school year.

From November to May, volunteers from Phoenix Contact will visit the school once a month to teach hands-on lessons related to solar and wind energy. Last year's program was based on volunteers who came exclusively from the Development and Manufacturing Company, but this year's expanded program will include volunteers from across the company.

"This idea for" Think BIG "was one of Phoenix Contact Development's brainstorming results, and manufacturing professionals could support our community as a whole," said David Skelton, vice president of Phoenix Contact Development and Manufacturing, Inc. "The STEM training program for Primary school students have excelled, and we have two years ago with Foose Elementary and the Harrisburg School District. What makes it unique from other STEM activities we have been involved in is that it was developed as part of the school curriculum and conforms to state standards as such. The syllabus uses technical methods to solve problems related to wind and solar energy. The first year at Foose Elementary was a great success. The students had fun with the approach and the results in science improved dramatically. It's exciting that we're entering our second year and welcoming a new class from the Foose Elementary School to our company for the 2018/19 school year.

"The next step in the Big Idea is to extend the program beyond Foose Elementary to other schools in Harrisburg and the surrounding school districts. To achieve this we need more technology-oriented companies. Participation, of course, benefits students as well as our employees, who share the love of their profession with the youth and our entire business by building our collaborative skills into a larger, more diverse group of employees.
