24. July 2018 – The telematics data collector TDC-E is a further addition to the SICK gateway system portfolio. This solution provides functionalities for the acquisition, processing and transmission of process and sensor data. As a communication platform with an open end-to-end IoT architecture, the TDC-E now offers numerous analog and digital connectivity options for connecting autonomous sensors and sensor systems. The mobile communication options have been expanded to include WLAN and WPAN – creating the prerequisites for additional functionalities such as the indoor localization of mobile machines. The data collected, analyzed and individually visualized by the TDC-E show that the operating state of the networked sensors and the processes in which they are used are transparent. Optionally, SICK also offers customer-specific cloud solutions for processing at a higher level. These solutions support the TDC-E with the protocols MQTT, OPC UA and JSON via suitable interfaces such as GSM 3G +, WLAN and Ethernet.

As a physical device, the TDC-E acts as a connection point between controllers, sensors and smart devices and the cloud. The gateway system with SSI, RS-232, RS-485, RS-422, an analogue output, digital I / Os, CAN bus, Ethernet, WLAN and WPAN provides the most common interfaces for the connection of sensors and sensor systems in the Industry from SICK and other manufacturers. Once real-time performance data such as levels, drive temperatures, protective field violations, read rates, operating times or collisions have been collected, this information is aggregated and analyzed in TDC-E to minimize data volume to external applications or forwarded to the cloud

Preprocessed The TDC-E can carry out analyzes that trigger an alarm via the switching outputs or send an alarm message via SMS if preset sensor values ​​are exceeded or if errors occur, for example. Collected and processed data can also be used via machine and plant operation at higher IT levels or in the cloud for intelligent services and applications. These Smart Services ensure that the operational status of the sensors in the field and the entire process are as transparent as possible. The TDC-E generates both active and predictive information for timely process optimization and system maintenance.

The TDC-E accesses process and sensor data, creates transparency and thus enables the optimization of processes. With open interfaces, direct sensor connection, browser-based configuration with the SICK Engineering Tool SOPAS – without additional software and without license costs – as well as on-site or web-based data visualization, the TDC-E is also a system data hub that is manufacturer-independent. It ensures that machines, plants and processes are fit for Industry 4.0 and thus for the future.

The gateway system with a mobile connection from SICK and in particular the new TDC-E will be used as a security and management tool for the sensor-aided management and monitoring of production lines, mobile machines, multi-site facilities, wind farms and similar facilities. Typical applications include vessel and truck tank and operations monitoring, status logging and swap body location, remote control of large tank and storage silo systems, remote monitoring of natural gas transfer stations, operational monitoring and localization of vehicles, material handling equipment and mobile machinery. Further applications include the recording of events in crane installations, at level crossings or in underground stations, as well as the monitoring of field instrumentation in plants, including their integration into preventive maintenance concepts.
