Global Machine Tool Supplier Hurco's BX40i double-column bridge machine, originally launched in 2016, has been upgraded for a variety of trades, from general manufacturing to highly specialized industries such as aerospace
stability The twin-column design and the total weight (9,100 kg) of the BX40i ensure accuracy and high-quality surface finish. Designed specifically for the mold making and aerospace industries, the BX40i meets the needs of any high-speed machining job that requires higher tolerances while operating the machine at optimal spindle speeds.
"With the Double Column Compared to a single-column CNC machine (Computer Numerical Control), there is less tool bending, thermal deformation and vibration," says Hurco South Africa Regional Manager Christo Moolman. This is because the heat only affects the bridge structure in a straight line, rather than appearing on the X and Y axes.
Another advantage is that the spindle on a double column machine is closer to the mass of the machine providing increased rigidity
The BX40i is equipped with size 45 roller rails on all axles and its linear scales are Default. It differs from other bridge CNC machines in the integrated Hurco control powered by WinMax control software and the patented UltiMotion motion system.
UltiMotion determines the optimal trajectory for operating the tool and achieves more consistent programmed feed rates. This reduces cycle time by up to 30% or more, depending on the complexity of the part while improving surface quality. With UltiMotion, cornering speed is 2.5 times faster than conventional motion speed, and machine pressure is reduced by at least 50%.
The flexibility of WinMax makes machine operators more productive and job shops more profitable as it supports multiple programming methods. These include conversational programming, which minimizes idle time, while waiting for the computer-aided design (CAD) / computer-aided manufacturing station (CAM), industrial standard NC programming – also known as Fanuc – and a Hurco programming specific feature, the NC / Conversation merge that further optimizes efficiency.
UltiMotion contains dynamic look-ahead instead of fixed look-ahead, which adapts to the toolpath. UltiMotion differs from the functions of CAD / CAM software and improves CAM output by providing better machine mechanics and dynamics processing. All Hurco CNC machining centers are equipped with UltiMotion.
Moolman concludes that Hurco has expanded the BX range with the BX50i introduced in March and the BX60i available at the end of 2018.
