To advise manufacturers on best practice methods for selecting components for robots, SMB Bearings has published a white paper on Bearings for Robotics . The white paper is available for download on the SMB Bearings website.

Industrial robots are used in the production line for their precision and repeatability. This means that every component in these machines must contribute to maintaining that precision, which is often overlooked. Consider a six-axis robot as an example. These articulated robotic arms require high accuracy of their hinges to properly perform assembly processes. Without the right bearings, this accuracy can not be maintained.

SMB Bearings has been providing bearings for robotics for over 30 years and recommends customers choose robotic applications in thin-walled stainless steel bearings. Since there are hardly any size differences between the inner and outer rings of these bearings, they do not drastically increase the weight of a robot and therefore can maintain the accuracy of the machine.

The whitepaper also gives hints on the lubrication requirements for robot bearings. Due to the small size of these bearings, not only must the ring be made to be as round as possible, but the shaft and housing should have the same roundness to avoid distortion of the bearing rings. In order to keep the ring running smoothly, a low viscosity grease is required, as too greasy grease can increase bearing torque to an unacceptable level.

The white paper also includes a case study with the Shadow Robot Company, where SMB Bearings provided special bearings to create a gripper robot hand. For this project, the company supplied EZO bearings from Sapporo Precision.
