13. September 2018 - As part of a new custom medical device center, Birmingham University has installed two Renishaw RenAM 500M metal additive manufacturing systems. The systems were installed at the Materials and Metallurgy School as part of a project that forms the basis for a partnership in health care. The center will bring together science, clinical and industrial practice to improve the medical device market and improve patient opportunities.

The facility will bring together scientists from various disciplines to explore the full potential of additive manufacturing (AM) medical devices. The University of Birmingham is conducting several active projects to develop new medical devices and technologies that support recovery from illness or injury and cover various clinical tasks. The team is currently working to invent a new generation of medical devices that are anatomically as well as therapeutically tailored to the patient.

One project deals with cranioplasty, a common procedure with a high infection rate. The University of Birmingham is working with a British company, Accentus Medical, to apply technology to the surface of custom metal AM skull plates to reduce the likelihood of infection. This project could dramatically impact patient quality of life.

"Additive manufacturing increases the freedom of design for medical devices," Dr. Sophie Cox, Lecturer in Healthcare Technologies, Healthcare Technologies Institute, University of Birmingham. "With the technology, we have flexibility in implant geometry and material selection.The installation of the RenAM 500M systems will create a new center for customized medical devices at the University of Birmingham.

" We chose Renishaw because of its experience as a custom manufacturer Cox added, "Renishaw has extensive expertise in bringing medical devices to market. As a university, we are working on ISO 13485, which Renishaw has already achieved. This partnership is just the beginning of a series of activities in which we will align our research capabilities with Renishaw's know-how to take advantage of additive manufacturing for patients. "
